Research: Background Knowledge & Technical Stuffs

During the early stages of doing personal project, I have decided to do the research on two categories: background research on the topic and the technical stuff (art composition, techniques, etc.). This one is a snippet of my research on the background research on the topic which is about women empowerment.

The main things I researched on are:

the definition
the importance
how to empower women
women empowerment right now
inspiring women figures

I think that it’s important to do some background research because it helps me to understand better the topic itself and helps me to convey the message better to the audience. I think that it also gives me much more knowledge that I previously didn’t know about this movement and broadens my perspective of the world.

These are the notes I took from Art class which was about photography at that time. Although the notes I took are for photography, I think that it also applies to drawing because both are a form of art. This helps me to get an image of what I should look into more to help improve my drawings.

Although this was posted on the 19th of February, 2018, the research was done in late October to mid of November. This was only posted late because I simply forgot to make and update after I was done as there were many other assignments from other subject.

Art Book Composition: Sketch vs. Final

Before I put all my drawings together, I sketched out how I want the book to look like.

These are just the rough ideas of what piece I want to put first and next. This gave me a rough idea of how many pieces of drawing I want to do as well as how long it might take me. At that time, I was struggling on what I should draw and this helped me a lot in terms of visualising my thoughts and how the overall book is going to be.

In the end, the book didn’t turn out like the rough composition. I added a divider/foreword that tells the audience what the book is going to be before I present my drawings. I also added an extra page before the end so it looks cleaner.

Progress of Art Book

it’s been two months since my last journal entry. i was unable record my progress due to being so busy with other school things as well as i felt unmotivated to do anything and everything.

my plan was to do most of the thing during the holiday so that i will finalize everything on the first few two weeks of school. but, it didn’t go as planned. i was slumped during the break. although it was fun as i was able to spend time with my family and go out to eat, i never thoroughly enjoyed it. it was because at the back of my head, i am always reminded the due date of PP and other assignments. it really got to me and i was so anxious about the deadline that i cannot do anything. my body won’t physically move to open my laptop and start drawing. i was very uninspired and unmotivated. i would call this feeling “art-blocked”.

only when school starts, i finally got my things going and i managed to sketched out 11 art works that would fit as 12 pages of my final art book (which was out of 25-30 pages). i feel a lot better now and out of my slump and i feel like i can sketch out more art works tomorrow and start inking and coloring as well.

Criteria B: Design Spec., Budget Sheet, Project Planner

this month, i’ve finished making the design specification of the product. i want the art book to be 20-35 pages long in the size of B5 with soft cover. the rest of the specifications such as materials, target audience, etc are on the word document.

for the budget sheet, i have not bought anything yet so i only put my budget there which is Rp. 2,000,000,- along with the things i plan to buy. once i buy it, i will fill in the chart and keep the receipt for the record.

lastly, i made a project planner so i know what i should do and when things are due so that i can pace myself and not leave everything till the last minute

Criteria A: Topic and Global Context.

in criteria A, i talked about my topic and global context.

i chose my topic, women empowerment through art, because i think that it is a very important topic that we need to address since it’s a part of our society and it will greatly impact a lot of people in this world. i choose art as my medium because it’s is my passion/hobby/interest and i want my abilities/skills in art to be used for the greater good which can help the society.

due to this, my global context will be about personal and cultural expression. i will be using art to express myself and my opinions about women empowerment.

the goal of this project will be to create 20-30 pages art book that contain inspiring quotes and inspirational women figures with the aim to spread the message of women empowerment and inspire young girls and women as well.

some prior knowledge that i have are only from social medias where people express and share their opinions online. this means that i will need to do more background research about my topic to expand my knowledge.

i have decided that my topic for my personal project will be about women empowerment with the goal to spread message about said topic and to hopefully inspire young girls and women.

the medium that i will be using for this project will be art since i am very passionate about it and it is something i’m good at. i’ve been drawing and doing art ever since i was small so, i’ve acquired some skills over the past years that i’ve been doing it.

over the past years, i have only been drawing for the sake of fun times and it is a way for me to express my artistic thoughts and feelings. those art works are nice and aesthetically pleasing but it does not have very much meaning to it. it’s sole purpose is for the aesthetic. now, i want to use my skills to be able to voice my opinions regarding social issues such as gender equality, women empowerment, etc. not only i would be doing what i love, i would also be contributing to society and now my art would means so much more to me and maybe, other people as well.
